«The family is not chosen» is a project carried out during the quarantine, with the aim of spending part of my daily time on it. Understood more as part of leisure time than as work.
For its development I have resorted to the use of images from the Gombau collection, which my family partly owns, and images from our family album.
This file has been with us all our lives and with it, this family. They have been an active part of our routine, our conversations, discussions, research and projects. They have sat at the table with us and we with them. In short, they have taken up more space and time than other members of our family and we probably know better.
Hence this project arises. On the one hand, the need to spend part of my free time during the period of confinement and on the other, the romantic idea that, after walking a lifetime with the Gombau family, perhaps it was time to get together and live together forever in a place that brings us together, that brings us closer. And what better than two families of photographers find themselves using photography as a support.
The series is made up of forty images, intervened by me.
The final result has been a series of portraits involving both families. For this and as a starting point, I have used images of members of the Gombau family, representing the classical photography of the time. The portraits of our family have been integrated into them, already using contemporary tools and methods and bringing each of the images from our family album to the representation of the basic unit of the current photography, the pixel.
“La familia no se elige” es un proyecto realizado durante la cuarentena, con el objetivo de emplear parte de mi tiempo diario en ello. Entendido más como parte de tiempo de ocio que como trabajo.
Para su desarrollo he recurrido a la utilización de imágenes del fondo Gombau, del que mi familia, en parte es propietaria, e imágenes de nuestro álbum familiar.
Este archivo lleva con nosotros toda la vida y con él, esta familia. Han sido parte activa de nuestra rutina, nuestras conversaciones, discusiones, investigaciones y proyectos. Se han sentado a la mesa con nosotros y nosotros con ellos. En definitiva, han ocupado más espacio y tiempo que otros miembros de nuestra familia y que probablemente, conozcamos mejor.
De ahí surge este proyecto. Por un lado, la necesidad de emplear parte de todo mi tiempo libre durante el periodo de confinamiento y por otro, la idea romántica de que, después de caminar toda una vida junto a la familia Gombau, quizás era el momento de juntarse y convivir para siempre en un espacio que nos reúna, que nos acerque. Y qué mejor que dos familias de fotógrafos se encuentren utilizando la fotografía como soporte.
La serie se compone de cuarenta imágenes, intervenidas por mí.
El resultado final han sido una serie de retratos de los que participan ambas familias.
Para ello y como punto de partida, he utilizado imágenes de miembros de la familia Gombau, representando la fotografía clásica de la época. Los retratos de nuestra familia han sido integrados en ellas, utilizando ya herramientas y métodos contemporáneos y llevando cada una de las imágenes de nuestro álbum familiar a la representación de la unidad básica de la fotografía actual, el pixel.
